What to Expect

The Lakeshore Trail is one of the most remote day hikes — or overnight backpacks — in the lower 48, and getting to the trailhead is half the adventure. You'll arrive by boat or floatplane to Stehekin, a tiny community with no road access, then set off along the western shore of Lake Chelan through old-growth forest, past cascading side creeks, and along stretches where the turquoise lake fills every gap in the trees. The trail rolls through moderate ups and downs as it traces the shoreline, weaving between dense cedar groves and sun-blasted rocky sections. At seventeen miles one way, this isn't a casual stroll — it's a full commitment that rewards with lakeside camps, swimming holes, and the kind of quiet you only find when cars literally cannot reach you. Backpackers and solitude addicts will be in heaven.

Safety Advisory

Several creek crossings can run high and fast during snowmelt in June and early July — trekking poles and water shoes earn their weight on this trail.

Black bears are active along the lakeshore corridor, particularly near berry patches in late summer. Hang food properly at designated camp areas and make noise on blind corners.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Take the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan to Stehekin and arrange a pickup date — there's no cell service, so plan your return before you leave civilization behind.

Trail Tip

Cache water at creek crossings rather than carrying your full supply the entire way. The trail crosses several reliable streams, but spacing varies, so study the map beforehand and bring a filter.

Trail Tip

Hike north to south (Stehekin to Prince Creek or beyond) to keep the afternoon sun at your back and the lake views in front of you. The light on the water in the late afternoon is worth planning around.
