What to Expect

This is the kind of trail you knock out before dinner while the campfire gets going. Starting right from the Newhalem Creek Campground, the half-mile loop winds through a cathedral of old-growth Douglas fir and western red cedar — trees so massive they make you feel appropriately small. The trail is flat, soft with packed earth and needles, and shaded almost entirely by the canopy overhead. You'll cross a footbridge or two, hear the creek rushing nearby, and catch the damp, resinous smell that defines the North Cascades lowlands. There's no summit or dramatic viewpoint here — the forest itself is the destination. This is perfect for families with young kids, anyone stretching their legs after the drive up Highway 20, or hikers who appreciate that not every trail needs to punish your knees to be worth walking.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Walk it at dusk when the campground quiets down — the old-growth forest takes on an almost eerie stillness, and you're more likely to spot deer browsing near the creek.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the nearby Trail of the Cedars (also short and flat) to turn a quick leg-stretch into a proper hour of forest bathing without breaking a sweat.

Trail Tip

The massive root systems of the old-growth trees make for surprisingly compelling photographs — shoot from ground level with a wide-angle lens to capture the scale of the trunks against the canopy.
