What to Expect

This is less a hike and more a short stroll to one of the most dramatic waterfalls in the North Cascades — a towering cascade that drops over three hundred feet into a misty gorge. From the trailhead near Stehekin, a well-maintained path winds through old-growth cedar and Douglas fir for barely ten minutes before you hear the roar. The trail ends at a viewpoint where Rainbow Creek launches off a cliff face in a single, thundering plunge that throws spray across the rocks on windy days. The forest canopy keeps you shaded the entire way, and the path is smooth enough for sandals, though the mist near the falls can make things slippery. This is the perfect leg-stretcher for anyone arriving on the Lady of the Lake ferry, and photographers will burn through memory cards trying to capture the scale of the thing.

Safety Advisory

The rocks and wooden viewing platform near the falls get slick from constant spray — watch your footing, especially with kids, as there are steep drop-offs near the gorge edge.

Stehekin has no road access from the outside, so there is no cell service and no quick way out — make sure someone knows your travel plans before heading into the valley.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late morning when sunlight angles into the gorge and occasionally produces the rainbow that gives the falls its name — overcast days still deliver on drama, but you lose the light play on the mist.

Trail Tip

Stehekin is only accessible by ferry, floatplane, or a long trail, so plan your visit around the Lady of the Lake ferry schedule from Chelan — the midday arrival gives you plenty of time for this trail and the bakery stop at Stehekin Pastry Company.

Trail Tip

Stand at the left side of the viewing area for the best composition that includes the full drop and the pool below — a polarizing filter cuts the mist glare and brings out the emerald color of the water.
