What to Expect

Rainbow Lake sits in the Stehekin Valley, one of the most remote corners of the North Cascades — you can't even drive here from the outside world. The trail climbs steadily through old-growth forest, thick with western red cedar and Douglas fir, before opening up to subalpine meadows that explode with wildflowers in midsummer. The lake itself is a stunner: a deep alpine cirque backed by jagged peaks, with water so clear you can see the bottom in the shallows. The Stehekin setting means you'll likely share the trail with a handful of people at most, making this feel like your own private slice of the range. This is a trail for hikers who don't mind earning their solitude — getting to the trailhead is half the adventure.

Safety Advisory

Snow lingers on the upper portions of this trail well into July most years — bring microspikes if you're hiking before August and be prepared to navigate snowfields near the lake.

The Stehekin Valley is black bear country; store food properly and carry bear spray, especially if camping overnight at the lake.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

You'll need to take the Lady of the Lake ferry from Chelan or a floatplane to reach Stehekin — book ferry tickets well in advance during summer, as they sell out fast on weekends.

Trail Tip

Use the Stehekin shuttle bus to reach the Rainbow Lake trailhead rather than walking the road; check the current shuttle schedule at the Golden West Visitor Center when you arrive.

Trail Tip

The lake makes an outstanding overnight backpacking destination if you snag a backcountry permit — camping near the outlet gives you front-row seats to alpenglow on the surrounding peaks at sunset.
