What to Expect

Thunder Knob is the trail North Cascades hands to newcomers as proof that world-class scenery doesn't require suffering. The path climbs gently through second-growth forest — Douglas fir and western red cedar keeping you shaded — with the grade so mellow you might forget you're gaining any elevation at all. Roots and rocks keep the surface interesting without being ankle-threatening. The real show starts at the knob itself: a rocky overlook where Diablo Lake's impossible turquoise water spreads out below you, backed by jagged peaks still holding snow well into summer. That color isn't a filter — it's glacial rock flour suspended in the water, and it genuinely looks fake. The whole out-and-back takes most people about ninety minutes. This is the trail for anyone who wants a legitimate Cascades moment without committing to an all-day death march.

Safety Advisory

The summit knob has steep drop-offs on the lake side with no guardrails — keep close watch on children and stay back from the edge, especially when the rock is wet.

SR 20 typically closes from mid-November through late April or May depending on snowpack. The trail itself may be snow-covered or icy in shoulder season even when the road is open.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The trailhead at the Colonial Creek Campground area fills up fast on summer weekends — arrive before 9 AM or after 4 PM, or park along the road and walk in. The North Cascades Highway (SR 20) closes seasonally, so check WSDOT before driving out.

Trail Tip

Bring layers even on warm days. The summit knob is exposed and catches wind off the lake that can drop the temperature noticeably. A packable wind shell weighs nothing and saves the summit experience.

Trail Tip

For the best photographs of Diablo Lake's turquoise color, shoot between late morning and early afternoon when the sun is high enough to light up the glacial flour in the water. Overcast days actually intensify the color contrast.
