The Quick Take

Fairholme sits on the western shore of Lake Crescent, one of the deepest and clearest lakes in Washington — the kind of water that looks Photoshopped in person. It's a mid-sized campground with a solid mix of lakeside and forested sites, and the on-site boat launch makes it the obvious pick for paddlers. The trade-off is real, though: no flush toilets, no showers, and a 21-foot RV limit that rules out most big rigs. You do get potable water, a camp store, and food lockers (mandatory in bear country), plus an amphitheater for ranger programs. Compared to Kalaloch on the coast or Hoh in the rainforest, Fairholme is the lake campground — quieter, less iconic, but genuinely beautiful. Choose this one if your ideal morning starts with coffee at the water's edge and your ideal afternoon involves a kayak.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Sites closest to the lake fill first, obviously. When booking opens, target the low-numbered sites on the water side of the loop — they offer direct lake views and the shortest walk to the boat launch. If those are gone, the forested sites along the back offer decent shade and more privacy.

Camping Tip

Lake Crescent Lodge is a ten-minute drive east for a sit-down meal when camp food gets old, and the Spruce Railroad Trail — a flat, paved path along the north shore — is perfect for a mellow afternoon hike or bike ride with kids. The Marymere Falls trail is also just down the road.

Camping Tip

No showers means you'll want biodegradable soap and a solar shower bag. The dump station is a lifesaver if you're in a small camper, and the camp store stocks basics, but bring your own ice — they don't carry it. Cell service exists here, which is rare for Olympic, so don't count on a full digital detox.
