What to Expect
This gentle loop on the north shore of Lake Quinault winds through one of the most accessible pockets of old-growth temperate rainforest in the Olympics. You'll walk beneath towering Sitka spruce and western red cedar draped in curtains of moss, with sword ferns carpeting the forest floor so thickly it feels like wading through green waves. The trail is soft and loamy underfoot, occasionally punctuated by exposed roots and short boardwalk sections over wetter ground. Roughly halfway around, the loop opens to filtered views of Lake Quinault through the trees — not a grand panorama, but a quiet reward that matches the trail's contemplative mood. The whole thing takes well under an hour at a leisurely pace, making it perfect for families with young kids, anyone recovering from a bigger hike, or visitors who simply want to stand among ancient trees without committing to a full day on the trail.
Safety Advisory
Roots and boardwalk sections get slick when wet, which in the Quinault Valley means most of the year. Wear shoes with decent tread rather than sandals.
The Lake Quinault area is prime black bear habitat. Make noise on the trail, especially around blind corners in dense vegetation.

Pro Tips
Trail Tip
Walk the loop clockwise to hit the lakeshore glimpses while the light is still angled through the canopy — the moss practically glows in the morning.
Trail Tip
Pair this with the nearby Maple Glade Rain Forest Trail for a half-day rainforest double feature without breaking a sweat.
Trail Tip
After rain, the moss and lichen colors intensify dramatically — this is one of the rare trails where overcast skies actually improve the experience, so don't skip it on a gray day.
