What to Expect

This loop through the Sol Duc Valley is one of Olympic's most satisfying moderate hikes — you get old-growth forest, a legitimate waterfall, and that rare luxury of ending somewhere different from where you started. The trail winds through towering Douglas fir and western hemlock, with ferns carpeting every surface like nature's wallpaper. The highlight is Sol Duc Falls, where the river splits around a rocky outcrop and plunges into a narrow gorge with enough force to mist your face from the overlook. The connector between the falls and Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort runs along the river through cathedral-like forest, quieter than the main falls trail and genuinely peaceful. This is the kind of hike that rewards people who prefer immersion over intensity — no grueling switchbacks, just nearly six miles of the lush, green, impossibly alive forest that makes the Olympic Peninsula unlike anywhere else.

Safety Advisory

The trail crosses several footbridges that can be slick when wet — which in the Sol Duc Valley means most of the year. Tread carefully, especially on the mossy wooden surfaces.

The Sol Duc Road closes seasonally, typically from late fall through spring. Check with the ranger station before driving out, or you'll find a locked gate and a wasted hour.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from Sol Duc Campground and hike to the falls first — most day-trippers walk the short out-and-back from the falls trailhead, so you'll have the overlook to yourself if you arrive via the loop before mid-morning.

Trail Tip

Time your finish to end at Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort, where you can soak in the mineral pools after the hike. The resort pools are open to day visitors for a fee, and post-hike soaking in those warm sulfur springs is as good as it sounds.

Trail Tip

The footbridge just above Sol Duc Falls is the money shot for photographers — arrive when morning light filters through the canopy for that classic misty, backlit waterfall look. The overlook platform gets crowded, but the bridge rarely does.
