What to Expect
Think of this as a rainforest sampler — a single, unhurried loop on smooth pavement that drops you straight into the Hoh's cathedral atmosphere without demanding anything from your legs. You're steps from the visitor center, but the forest closes in fast: Sitka spruce the width of a small car, western red cedar with shaggy, fire-resistant bark, and bigleaf maple branches so draped in club moss they look like they're wearing fur coats. The canopy is dense enough that even on a dry day, water still drips from the ferns below. The light here is famously green and diffuse, like hiking inside a terrarium. It's over before your coffee cools, but it delivers the essential Hoh experience in miniature. This one is for families with restless toddlers, travelers short on time, and anyone who wants proof that the Pacific Northwest really does look like a fantasy novel.

- 1
Use this loop as a calibration walk before committing to the Hall of Mosses or Hoh River Trail — it shows you exactly what you're in for and lets you decide if the kids or older relatives in your group are up for more.
- 2
Overcast skies are your friend here. The diffuse light on a grey Hoh morning makes every photograph look like it was shot by a professional. Avoid midday sun on the rare sunny days — the contrast gets harsh.
- 3
Crouch down and look at the forest floor: the variety of mosses, liverworts, and ferns packed into a few square feet is remarkable up close. Most visitors look up at the big trees and miss the equally dense miniature ecosystem at ankle height.
