What to Expect

This is the kind of trail that rewards you for simply showing up. The paved path rolls out across open grassland with zero pretense — no scrambling, no route-finding, just an easy walk through shortgrass prairie that feels like stepping into a Western landscape painting. The terrain is flat and exposed, with the horizon stretching in every direction until the ground drops away at Tawa Point, where you get a sudden, jaw-dropping panorama of the Painted Desert's red and purple badlands. It's the kind of view that makes you stop mid-sentence. The trail is named for the Hopi Sun Spirit, and standing at the overlook during golden hour, you'll understand why. This one is perfect for road-weary travelers who need to shake off hours of highway driving, families with small kids, and anyone who appreciates a big payoff for minimal effort.

Safety Advisory

There is zero shade on this trail. In summer, surface temperatures on the paved path can push well above air temperature — avoid midday walks from June through August and carry more water than you think you need for a short stroll.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during monsoon season (July-September). The exposed prairie offers nowhere to shelter, and lightning on flat ground is no joke — check the sky before heading out.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your walk for late afternoon when the Painted Desert bands glow in warm light — the reds and purples at Tawa Point are dramatically more vivid in the hour before sunset than at midday.

Trail Tip

This trail sits near the north entrance of the park, so pair it with your arrival or departure rather than backtracking — driving the full park road and then doubling back wastes a solid hour.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars for the overlook at Tawa Point. The layered badlands stretch for miles, and you can pick out color bands and distant mesas that are invisible to the naked eye. During spring, scan the prairie edges for pronghorn grazing in the grassland.
