Walk the Tawa Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
There is zero shade on this trail. In summer, surface temperatures on the paved path can push well above air temperature — avoid midday walks from June through August and carry more water than you think you need for a short stroll.
Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast during monsoon season (July-September). The exposed prairie offers nowhere to shelter, and lightning on flat ground is no joke — check the sky before heading out.

Pro Tips
Time your walk for late afternoon when the Painted Desert bands glow in warm light — the reds and purples at Tawa Point are dramatically more vivid in the hour before sunset than at midday.
This trail sits near the north entrance of the park, so pair it with your arrival or departure rather than backtracking — driving the full park road and then doubling back wastes a solid hour.
Bring binoculars for the overlook at Tawa Point. The layered badlands stretch for miles, and you can pick out color bands and distant mesas that are invisible to the naked eye. During spring, scan the prairie edges for pronghorn grazing in the grassland.
