What to Expect

This is Pinnacles for people who want to skip the crowds entirely. Starting from the campground on the east side, you'll wander beneath a canopy of massive valley oaks — some with trunks wider than a car — along a path that grows fainter the farther you go. That's the point. As an unmaintained trail, expect overgrown sections, faint tread, and the occasional need to navigate by instinct rather than signage. The terrain rolls gently through grassland and oak savanna, a stark contrast to the park's famous rocky spires visible in the distance. Bird life is outstanding here — acorn woodpeckers hammer away overhead while California quail scatter at your feet. This is not a destination hike; it's a wandering hike. You'll love it if you prefer birdsong over boot traffic and don't mind a trail that asks you to pay attention.

Safety Advisory

Rattlesnakes are common in the grasslands here, especially in warm months. The overgrown trail makes them harder to spot, so watch your step and avoid reaching into brush.

There is no water source on this trail and very little shade once you leave the oak canopy. The east side of Pinnacles regularly hits triple digits from May through September — plan accordingly or save this one for cooler months.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early in the morning when bird activity peaks — the first two hours after sunrise are when you'll spot the most species, including raptors hunting over the grasslands.

Trail Tip

Bring long pants and gaiters if hiking after spring rains. The trail gets overgrown with star thistle and tall grasses that will shred bare legs by the turnaround point.

Trail Tip

Download the Merlin Bird ID app before you go — the sound identification feature works remarkably well in this quiet valley, and you'll pick up species you'd otherwise walk right past.
