What to Expect

This is one of the most unusual trails in the national park system — less a hike and more a walk through someone's abandoned life. From the campground, you stroll north along a flat dirt road for a quarter mile before the remnants of the Bacon Ranch materialize: weathered structures and fencing from a 19th-century homestead tucked into Bear Valley. The terrain is gentle and wheelchair-accessible, making the 'strenuous' rating on paper feel like a clerical error. The road continues south past the ranch to a gate, giving you a full four-mile out-and-back if you push through. The landscape is open grassland framed by Pinnacles' volcanic spires in the distance, with surprisingly good wildlife spotting — especially at dawn and dusk. After dark, the night sky here is legitimately spectacular. This trail is perfect for history buffs, families with dogs, and anyone who wants a mellow evening walk that ends with stargazing.

Safety Advisory

Rattlesnakes are active in the grasslands around the trail from spring through fall — stick to the road and watch where you step, especially if you have pets or kids.

There is zero shade on this route, and Bear Valley can get punishingly hot in summer — if you're walking midday between June and September, bring sun protection and more water than you think you need.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late afternoon so you can explore the ranch structures in golden light, then stick around for sunset and some of the best night sky viewing on the east side of the park.

Trail Tip

This is one of the rare pet-friendly trails at Pinnacles — dogs must stay within 10 feet of the road and 25 feet of the ranch structures, so bring a standard six-foot leash and plan accordingly.

Trail Tip

The Bacon Ranch structures photograph best in the morning when the sun backlights the eastern ridgeline behind them — shoot low to frame the old fencing against the volcanic peaks.
