What to Expect

This connector trail links the Pinnacles Campground to the Bear Gulch Day Use Area, threading along Chalone and Bear creeks through some of the east side's most underappreciated riparian scenery. You'll start on the Bench Trail, a wide and surprisingly gentle path that hugs the creek bed beneath massive Western Sycamores — their bone-white branches arching overhead like natural cathedral ribs. The trail transitions from open grassland views into shaded creek corridors where, after a good rain, small waterfalls materialize along the Sycamore Trail section. The Peaks View segment offers a wheelchair-accessible stretch with panoramic sightlines toward the park's volcanic spires. This isn't a trail that punches you in the lungs — it's one that rewards patience and attention to detail. Perfect for hikers who want Pinnacles' signature scenery without the talus cave crowds, and for anyone who considers a creekside sycamore grove a legitimate destination.

Safety Advisory

Creek crossings can become slippery and unpredictable after storms — the same rain that creates those waterfalls also turns rock surfaces into skating rinks. Trekking poles earn their weight here.

Rattlesnakes are active in the warmer months and favor the riparian corridors this trail follows. Watch where you place your hands and feet, especially near rock edges and tall grass along the creek.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Use this as a one-way shuttle hike: park one car at the campground and another at Bear Gulch Day Use Area, then walk the whole route without backtracking. It turns an out-and-back into a satisfying point-to-point.

Trail Tip

Hit this trail within 48 hours of a significant rainstorm — the seasonal waterfalls along Sycamore Trail only appear after heavy precipitation and most visitors never see them because they wait for sunny weekends.

Trail Tip

The Peaks View section connects to the South Wilderness Trail, which sees almost zero foot traffic. If you want a side detour into genuine solitude, duck onto that connector for even fifteen minutes and you'll likely have the landscape entirely to yourself.
