Carruthers Cove Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The beach is unsupervised with unpredictable surf and sneaker waves — never turn your back on the ocean, and keep well above the waterline on incoming tides.
The trail can be muddy and slippery year-round thanks to coastal fog drip. Waterproof boots with good tread are not optional here.
Trail Details
- 1
Time your visit around low tide to explore the tidepools and exposed rock shelves at the cove — check NOAA tide charts for Crescent City before you go.
- 2
Trekking poles earn their weight on the return climb, especially when the trail is slick from coastal moisture. The skid road surface gets greasy after fog or rain.
- 3
Scan the meadow clearings near the trailhead for Roosevelt elk herds, particularly in early morning. They're most active at dawn and often graze within easy viewing distance.
