What to Expect
The Revelation Trail earns its name — even a short walk here delivers a genuine reckoning with scale. This loop winds through a cathedral grove of old-growth coast redwoods in Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, where the trees are so wide a family of five couldn't link arms around the base. The path stays flat and firm underfoot, threading through a lush understory of sword ferns and oxalis that carpets the forest floor in green. Filtered light turns the canopy into something close to stained glass on clear mornings. The trail was originally designed for visually impaired visitors, complete with a guide rope and Braille interpretive signs — which means the sensory experience was thought through deliberately. The result is a trail that rewards slow walkers, curious kids, and anyone who wants to stand inside a living forest without working for it.

- 1
The Prairie Creek Visitor Center parking lot fills by mid-morning on summer weekends — arrive before 9am or use the overflow pullout on Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and walk in.
- 2
The Braille interpretive signs along the guide rope contain genuinely interesting natural history notes, not just the obvious stuff — read them even if you don't need them.
- 3
Look low, not just up: the redwood sorrel (the clover-like ground cover) blooms with tiny white flowers in spring and creates a solid green carpet that photographs beautifully in overcast light, which is most days here.
