What to Expect

You step out of the car after a winding drive up Bald Hills Road and immediately the world changes. The loop trail drops you into a cathedral of old-growth coast redwoods — trees so massive your brain needs a minute to recalibrate what 'big' means. The path is smooth, level, and well-maintained, winding through a soft carpet of sorrel and ferns beneath a canopy that filters the light into something almost underwater. Interpretive signs along the way tell the story of Lady Bird Johnson's dedication ceremony in 1968, and a modest plaque marks the spot where she helped secure the park's future. The whole loop takes about an hour at a leisurely pace, and you'll spend most of it with your neck craned upward. This is the perfect trail for first-timers to the redwoods, families with small kids, anyone in a wheelchair, or visitors who want an honest-to-goodness ancient forest experience without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

Bald Hills Road can be treacherous in winter storms — check current road conditions at the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center before heading up, as closures for snow or mudslides happen without much warning.

Roosevelt elk sometimes wander near the trailhead area. They look docile but are unpredictable, especially cows with calves — keep at least fifty yards of distance and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Arrive before 10 a.m. or after 4 p.m. to dodge the tour bus crowds — midday in summer turns the small parking lot into a frustrating game of musical chairs.

Trail Tip

If you're driving an RV or towing a trailer, leave it in Orick. Bald Hills Road is narrow, steep, and has blind curves that will test your patience and your mirrors. Take a smaller vehicle or check with the visitor center about shuttle options.

Trail Tip

The grove photographs best on foggy mornings when light shafts pierce the canopy — overcast days actually produce richer, more dramatic shots than bluebird sunshine, so don't skip this trail just because the marine layer rolled in.
