Walk the Stout Memorial Grove Trail

What to Expect

This half-mile stroll is deceptively simple — the real adventure is getting there. Depending on when you visit, you'll either drive the seasonal unpaved Howland Hill Road or cross the Smith River on temporary summer footbridges, which turns even a short hike into a mini-expedition. Once you arrive, the grove itself is cathedral-quiet: massive old-growth redwoods towering roughly thirty stories overhead, their canopy filtering light into soft green columns. The trail is flat and wheelchair-accessible, winding through a 44-acre stand that many consider the crown jewel of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park. A short spur drops you down to the Smith River's edge, where the water runs impossibly clear over smooth stones. This is the kind of place where you sit down for five minutes and look up to find an hour has passed. Perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who wants maximum redwood grandeur with minimal sweat.

Safety Advisory

The Smith River can rise fast during winter storms and spring snowmelt — if the footbridges aren't installed and you're tempted to ford, don't. That current is far stronger than it looks.

Howland Hill Road is narrow, unpaved, and not suitable for RVs or trailers. If you meet oncoming traffic, someone is backing up — drive slowly and keep your mirrors tucked.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The summer footbridges typically go in late June and come out late September, but exact dates depend on the Smith River's water level — call Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park the week before your visit to confirm they're up.

Trail Tip

Parking costs eight dollars at the Jedediah Smith day use area, but if you're coming via Howland Hill Road (the unpaved route from Crescent City), you can access the grove without passing through the fee station — just make sure your vehicle can handle the narrow gravel road.

Trail Tip

For the best photographs, visit in the early morning when fog threads through the canopy and the light goes soft and diffused — by midday the contrast gets harsh and the magic fades.
