The Quick Take

Moraine Park is Rocky Mountain's flagship campground, and it earns that reputation honestly. Tucked into a wide glacial valley on the east side of the park, it offers the rare combination of easy access to Bear Lake Road trailheads and genuine mountain scenery -- elk regularly graze through camp at dusk, which never stops being surreal. With well over two hundred sites spread across multiple loops, it is one of the largest campgrounds in any Colorado national park, and that size means you will have neighbors. This is not a wilderness escape; it is a well-oiled base camp. No showers, no hookups, and no flush toilets keep things grounded, but potable water, a dump station, and reliable cell service soften the rough edges. Choose Moraine Park if you want to maximize trail access without sacrificing a decent night's sleep.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Summer reservations at Moraine Park evaporate within minutes of the booking window opening on Recreation.gov. Set a calendar reminder for exactly six months before your target dates, log in early, and have multiple date ranges ready as backup. Weekday arrivals are noticeably easier to snag than Friday or Saturday starts.

Camping Tip

Loop B and Loop C sites backed against the Big Thompson River offer the best combination of shade and scenery. Sites along the meadow edge in Loop A give you front-row seats to elk herds but less tree cover. If you are visiting in winter, Loop A sites 1 through 62 plus Loops B, C, and E are your only options, and they are first-come, first-served -- arrive before noon on Fridays to have any real selection.

Camping Tip

Bear Lake trailheads are barely ten minutes up the road, but parking fills by seven in the morning during summer. Take the free park shuttle from the nearby Park and Ride instead, which drops you at Glacier Gorge and Bear Lake without the stress. Stock up on firewood at the campground since gathering deadwood is prohibited.
