What to Expect

Starting from the Fern Lake Trailhead, you'll follow the Big Thompson River through dense stands of aspen and lodgepole pine, with the sound of rushing water keeping you company for the first couple of miles. The trail climbs steadily but never cruelly — think persistent staircase rather than wall. You'll pass through The Pool, a wide calm stretch of river worth a quick stop, before the path steepens through subalpine forest thick with spruce and fir. The final push rewards you with Fern Lake itself, a glassy alpine pool tucked beneath the dramatic cliffs of Notchtop Mountain and Little Matterhorn. The setting feels like a postcard that somehow undersold itself. Anglers will want to linger — the lake holds greenback cutthroat trout. This trail hits the sweet spot for hikers who want a legit mountain day without committing to a death march.

Safety Advisory

You're hiking above 8,000 feet and topping out near 9,500 — altitude headaches and shortness of breath are common for visitors from lower elevations. Give yourself a day to acclimate in Estes Park before tackling this one.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in fast from June through September, often by 1 PM. Start early and plan to be heading back down by noon — you do not want to be exposed on the upper trail section when lightning starts cracking.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Fern Lake Trailhead parking lot is small and fills by 7:30 AM on summer weekends. Arrive before 7 or plan to use the park shuttle from the Moraine Park Park & Ride to avoid circling the lot like a vulture.

Trail Tip

Break the hike into stages: The Pool at about 1.7 miles makes a perfect snack stop, and Fern Falls at roughly 2.7 miles gives you a waterfall payoff if anyone in your group wants to turn around early.

Trail Tip

Bring a fishing rod and a Colorado fishing license — Fern Lake is one of the more accessible backcountry fishing spots in the park, and the shoreline on the east side offers good casting room without bushwhacking.
