What to Expect

Starting from the Fern Lake Trailhead, this riverside ramble follows the Big Thompson River through a canopy of pine and aspen that keeps you cool even on the hottest July afternoons. The trail is wide, well-maintained, and practically flat — we're talking barely a couple hundred feet of gain over the whole thing, so your legs won't even notice. You'll cross a footbridge or two, pass through meadows where columbine and Indian paintbrush put on a show in early summer, and hear the river the entire way. The payoff is The Pool itself: a broad, swirling basin where the river pauses in a rocky gorge, the water deep and green. It's not a swimming hole (that water is snowmelt-cold year-round), but it's a gorgeous spot to sit and eat a sandwich. Perfect for families with younger kids, anyone recovering from yesterday's ambitious summit bid, or hikers who just want a mellow morning in the woods.

Safety Advisory

Rocky Mountain's timed entry permit system means you need a reservation during peak season (late May through early October). Book through recreation.gov well in advance — permits release in batches and sell out fast.

Afternoon thunderstorms roll in like clockwork from June through August, usually between 1 and 3 p.m. Start early and plan to be heading back by noon.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

The Fern Lake Trailhead parking lot is small and fills by 8 a.m. in summer — arrive before 7:30 or plan to use the free park shuttle from the Moraine Park park-and-ride to avoid circling the lot.

Trail Tip

This trail connects to Fern Falls and Fern Lake beyond The Pool, so if you're feeling strong, you can extend the hike into a longer day without retracing to a different trailhead.

Trail Tip

Bring a fishing rod and a valid Colorado fishing license — the Big Thompson has brook trout along this stretch, and the slower water near The Pool is a particularly productive spot in the mornings before other hikers arrive.
