What to Expect

Starting from the Colorado River Trailhead on RMNP's quieter west side, this out-and-back follows the infant Colorado River through a lush valley that feels nothing like the alpine tundra most visitors associate with the park. The trail is gentle and well-worn, winding through lodgepole pine forests and marshy meadows where moose sightings are practically guaranteed if you keep your eyes open. You'll cross a few small streams on log bridges before arriving at the remains of Lulu City — a silver mining boomtown from the 1880s that nature has almost entirely reclaimed. Don't expect standing buildings; a few cabin foundations and scattered timbers are all that remain, which somehow makes the history hit harder. The nearly four-mile approach feels mellow enough for strong kids, but long enough to thin out the crowds. Perfect for hikers who want wilderness without the punishment.

Safety Advisory

Moose are common along this corridor and can be dangerously aggressive, especially cows with calves in spring and bulls in fall rut. Keep at least 75 feet of distance and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

The west side of RMNP sits above 9,000 feet — visitors coming straight from lower elevations should watch for altitude sickness symptoms even on this relatively flat trail.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start early morning or late afternoon for the best chance at spotting moose in the meadows along the Colorado River — they're regulars here, especially near the Shipler Mine area about two miles in.

Trail Tip

This trail shares its first mile with the popular Red Mountain loop, so parking at the Colorado River Trailhead can fill by mid-morning on summer weekends. Arrive before 8 AM or after 3 PM to avoid the crunch.

Trail Tip

The Shipler Mine cabins about halfway to Lulu City make a worthy stop and a better photo subject than the sparse Lulu City ruins themselves — the old structures are more intact and photograph well against the surrounding forest.
