What to Expect

This short out-and-back through Saguaro East's Rincon Mountain District packs a surprising amount of character into a half-mile each way. You'll start on a well-defined desert path that winds through a forest of towering saguaros — some of the biggest specimens in the park, with arms branching in every direction like candelabras. The trail drops gently into a shaded wash where the temperature noticeably cools, and if you look up into the mesquite and palo verde canopy, you'll often spot a Great Horned Owl roosting in the branches. The homestead foundation itself is modest — a few stone remnants — but the interpretive signs paint a vivid picture of desert homesteading life. This is a perfect trail for families, first-time desert hikers, or anyone who wants to stand among giant saguaros without breaking a sweat.

Safety Advisory

Even on a short trail, desert sun is relentless from May through September. There's minimal shade outside the wash, so carry water and wear a hat even for this quick walk.

Watch where you step in the wash — rattlesnakes shelter in the cooler sand and leaf litter, especially during warmer months.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Head out in the first hour after the Cactus Forest Loop Drive opens — you'll likely have the wash to yourself, and the owls are more visible before foot traffic picks up.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars specifically for the wash section. Great Horned Owls roost in the larger trees along the drainage, and they're easy to miss with the naked eye even when they're right above you.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the nearby Mica View picnic area for a shaded lunch afterward — it has some of the best mountain views on the east side without any additional hiking.
