What to Expect

This is one of Saguaro East's most forgiving loops — nearly pancake-flat desert walking through a landscape that rewards attention rather than athleticism. You'll wind through thick stands of mature mesquite that throw welcome shade, then pass the remnants of the Loma Verde Mine, a reminder that people once tried to scratch a living from this unforgiving ground. The route connects with the Pink Hill Trail, where a modest overlook opens up views across the cactus forest toward Tanque Verde Ridge — thousands of saguaros standing like sentinels across the bajada. The trail surface is mostly packed dirt with some sandy stretches. This is a walk for people who want to actually look at the Sonoran Desert rather than just power through it — birders, photographers, and anyone who finds a two-hour desert stroll more appealing than a death march.

Safety Advisory

Rattlesnakes are active on this trail from April through October, especially near the mine ruins and rocky sections along Pink Hill — watch where you step and never reach into crevices.

Summer temperatures regularly exceed 105 degrees on exposed sections — if you're hiking between June and September, start at dawn or skip it entirely.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Javelina Picnic Area trailhead on the east side for the shortest approach to the mine site and the Pink Hill overlook — going counterclockwise puts the best views in the second half when you've warmed up.

Trail Tip

Carry at least a liter of water even though the distance is short — there is zero shade on the Pink Hill connector section, and Tucson's dry heat dehydrates you faster than you realize.

Trail Tip

The mesquite bosque section between the mine and the loop's north side is one of the best birding corridors in Saguaro East — cactus wrens, Gila woodpeckers, and curved-bill thrashers are almost guaranteed if you pause and listen.
