Tanque Verde Ridge Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The lower ridge is fully exposed with zero shade for several miles — afternoon temperatures from May through September regularly exceed 100 degrees, and heat exhaustion cases on this trail are not uncommon. Plan accordingly or postpone to cooler months.
Rattlesnakes are active along the rocky sections, especially in warmer months. Watch where you place your hands and feet on the scramblier portions, and give any sunbathing snake a wide berth.

Pro Tips
Start at dawn from the Javelina Picnic Area trailhead — you want to be well up the ridge before the sun turns the exposed lower sections into a convection oven, and early light on the saguaros is worth the alarm clock.
Carry a minimum of four liters per person for a peak attempt — there is no reliable water source along the entire ridge, and the elevation gain plus desert exposure will drain you faster than you expect.
If you're not up for the full out-and-back to the peak, Juniper Basin makes a satisfying turnaround point with shade, flat ground to rest, and the feeling that you've genuinely left civilization behind.
