Azalea Campground
The Quick Take
Azalea is the year-round workhorse of the Grant Grove area, and that alone makes it worth knowing about. While most Sequoia and Kings Canyon campgrounds bolt their gates come November, Azalea keeps a loop open through winter, giving you access to snow-dusted giant sequoias without the summer zoo. In peak season, it offers a solid spread of sites at a comfortable 6,500-foot elevation, close enough to Grant Grove Village for ice cream runs but wooded enough to feel like actual camping. The trade-off is real: no flush toilets, no showers, no hookups. You are roughing it by developed-campground standards. But the location is hard to beat, sitting just a few miles from the park entrance with the General Grant Tree practically next door. Choose Azalea if you want a reliable base camp with easy access to both parks, especially if you are visiting outside the summer crush.

Pro Tips
Winter camping here is the move most people miss. From November through April, only about twenty sites stay open on a first-come basis, meaning you can roll up without a reservation and camp surrounded by snow-covered sequoias with almost nobody around. Arrive by mid-morning on a Friday to snag a spot for the weekend.
The Grant Grove Village store is your lifeline, just a short drive away for firewood, snacks, and forgotten essentials. Stock up before you settle in, because once you are in your camp chair watching Steller's jays raid your neighbor's picnic table, you will not want to move.
Bear boxes are provided at every site, and the rangers here do not play around. Have your storage plan ready before you unload the car. Coolers, toothpaste, sunscreen, even chapstick goes in the metal box. Bears in this area are well-practiced at finding food, and a citation will cost you more than the campsite did.
