Buckeye Flat Campground
The Quick Take
Buckeye Flat is Sequoia's river campground -- a small, intimate spot tucked along the Middle Fork of the Kaweah River at a surprisingly low elevation compared to the park's high-country camps. With fewer than thirty sites, it feels almost private, and the constant rush of the river doubles as the best white noise machine you never bought. The trade-off is real: no flush toilets, no showers, no dump station, and summer heat that can be punishing in July and August. Fire restrictions kick in early and often. But the Paradise Creek Trail leaves right from camp, and the Middle Fork Trail is a short walk away, giving you trailhead-adjacent access without the chaos of Lodgepole. This is the pick for hikers and river lovers who treat a campground as a base camp, not a destination.

Pro Tips
Reservations open exactly one month out on a rolling basis -- set a calendar reminder and book at 7 AM Pacific on your target date. With only twenty-seven sites, same-day availability is essentially nonexistent during peak season.
The campground sits well below Giant Forest, so temperatures regularly top 100 degrees in midsummer. Late March through May and September are the sweet spots -- warm enough for river wading, cool enough to actually sleep at night.
Bears here are not theoretical; they are a nightly reality. Pack all toiletries, sunscreen, and even chapstick into the metal food lockers at your site. Coolers left on picnic tables, even empty ones that smell like lunch, are an invitation.
