The Quick Take

Canyon View is the group camping option in Cedar Grove, and it earns its name honestly -- the granite walls of Kings Canyon tower above you in a way that makes conversation stop mid-sentence. Sitting on the canyon floor along the South Fork of the Kings River, this reservation-only campground trades individual site privacy for something better: the ability to bring your whole crew to one of the deepest canyons in North America. With only a handful of group sites, it feels more exclusive than the neighboring individual campgrounds, and the quarter-mile stroll to Cedar Grove Village means you have access to a camp store without sacrificing that backcountry-adjacent atmosphere. The trade-off is real though -- no flush toilets, no showers, and cell service is essentially nonexistent down in the canyon. This is the pick for scout troops, family reunions, or any organized group that wants a legitimate wilderness setting without requiring everyone to carry a backpack.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Reservations open six months in advance on Recreation.gov, and summer weekends for group sites go fast -- book the day your window opens, especially for July and August. Midweek availability is significantly easier to land if your group has any flexibility.

Camping Tip

The Zumwalt Meadow trail starts just a few miles up the road and is flat enough for almost anyone in your group. Hit it early morning when the canyon light is best and the meadow is usually empty. Roads End and the Mist Falls trailhead are also close, giving stronger hikers a worthy day mission.

Camping Tip

Bear activity in Cedar Grove is no joke -- the metal food lockers at each site are mandatory, not decorative. Bring bungee cords or clips to keep the latches tight, and designate one person in your group as the food-storage enforcer. Coolers left on picnic tables will be investigated by bears, sometimes within hours of sunset.
