Moraine Campground
The Quick Take
Moraine sits in the belly of Kings Canyon, right along the South Fork of the Kings River, shaded by evergreens at a modest elevation that keeps summer nights comfortable without freezing you out. It is one of the larger campgrounds in the Cedar Grove area, which means you have a reasonable shot at snagging a spot during peak season — but do not mistake size for anonymity. The sites are close enough together that you will hear your neighbors, and the lack of flush toilets or showers keeps things decidedly rustic despite being a short walk from Cedar Grove Village and its small store. The trade-off is location: you are deep in one of the most dramatic river canyons in North America, with trailheads to Mist Falls and Zumwalt Meadow practically at your doorstep. Choose Moraine if you want a base camp for serious Kings Canyon day hiking without the full backcountry commitment.

Pro Tips
Reservations open one month in advance and the window is tight — set a calendar reminder for exactly 30 days before your target date and book the moment the system opens. Cedar Grove campgrounds fill fast once the road opens for summer, and Moraine's river-adjacent sites go first.
Cedar Grove Village is under a mile away with showers, a small grill, and a camp store, so you can travel lighter on food than you might expect for a campground this remote. That said, selection is limited and prices are steep — bring your staples and use the village for forgotten items and hot showers after dusty trail days.
Bear activity here is no joke. The metal food lockers at each site are mandatory, not decorative — rangers actively patrol and will cite you for leaving a cooler on the picnic table. Pack everything scented, including sunscreen and toothpaste, into the locker before you leave the site or turn in for the night.
