The Quick Take

Sheep Creek sits at the confluence of its namesake creek and the South Fork of the Kings River, right on the floor of Kings Canyon — one of the deepest canyons in North America. That location is the whole pitch. You are surrounded by granite walls that climb thousands of feet on either side, with river access steps from your tent. The campground is large enough that it rarely feels cramped, yet it is close enough to Cedar Grove Village to walk for supplies. The trade-off is real: no flush toilets, no showers, no cell service, and a winding thirty-mile drive from the park entrance that keeps casual visitors away. Bears are extremely active here, so the metal food lockers at every site are not optional decoration. This is the campground for people who want a proper canyon-floor basecamp without the crowds of Sentinel, and who do not mind roughing it a little for a dramatically better setting.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Reservations open exactly one month out on a rolling basis — set a calendar reminder for 7 AM Pacific on your target date, because prime summer weekends fill within hours. Mid-week arrivals in June or late August are your best shot at a last-minute grab.

Camping Tip

The Mist Falls trail starts just up the road at Roads End and is the signature Cedar Grove hike — get on it before 8 AM to beat the heat on the exposed sections. The trail follows the river and the payoff is one of the largest waterfalls in the park, best in early summer when snowmelt is peaking.

Camping Tip

There are no showers anywhere in Cedar Grove, full stop. Bring biodegradable soap and a solar shower bag, or embrace the river. Also, the camp store in the village has limited and expensive provisions — stock up on groceries in Fresno before you make the drive in.
