The Quick Take

Sunset is the big, reliable workhorse of the Grant Grove area -- one of the largest campgrounds in the parks, spread across an open stand of mixed conifers just a short walk from Grant Grove Village. That proximity is both its greatest strength and its limitation. You get a camp store, the visitor center right across the road, and easy access to the General Grant Tree trail, but you are not exactly roughing it in the backcountry. Sites are spread out enough to feel spacious, and the lack of flush toilets and showers keeps it from feeling like a parking lot. The on-site amphitheater is a genuine highlight for families -- ranger programs here are some of the best in the Sierra. Choose Sunset if you want a solid base camp with services nearby and do not mind trading solitude for convenience.

Pro Tips

Camping Tip

Reservations open exactly one month out and the best weekends in July sell out within hours. Set a calendar reminder for 7 AM Pacific on your target date minus 30 days, and have your Recreation.gov account ready to go -- do not waste time creating one at checkout.

Camping Tip

The General Grant Tree is a five-minute drive away, but most visitors hit it midday. Walk over before 8 AM when the parking lot is empty and the light filters through the sequoia canopy -- it is a completely different experience than the afternoon crowd scene.

Camping Tip

There are no showers at Sunset, but Grant Grove Village has a small market and grill. Stock up on firewood there rather than hauling it in, and bring a solar shower bag if you are staying more than two nights -- the elevation keeps days warm but nights drop fast.
