Roaring River Falls
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The rocks near the base of the falls stay slick with spray year-round. Stay behind the railing — the granite is polished smooth and a slip near the pool edge could turn ugly fast.
Cedar Grove access via Highway 180 closes mid-November through late April. Check with Caltrans before planning a shoulder-season visit, as reopening dates shift with snow conditions.
Trail Details
- 1
Time your visit for late May through mid-June when snowmelt peaks — the falls go from impressive to absolutely thundering, and the mist cloud doubles in size.
- 2
This makes an ideal mid-afternoon pit stop if you're driving the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway. Park, cool off in the spray for fifteen minutes, and get back on the road feeling human again.
- 3
The granite alcove where the falls pound into the pool creates surprisingly dramatic photo conditions — the backlighting through mist in late afternoon produces natural light rays without any filter tricks.
