What to Expect

Starting from Browns Gap at mile 83 on Skyline Drive, this loop delivers a triple waterfall payoff that few circuits in the Blue Ridge can match. You'll drop steeply through hardwood forest on the Doyles River Trail, losing most of your elevation in the first couple miles before reaching Upper Doyles River Falls — a graceful cascade that's worth a long pause. Continue downstream to Lower Doyles River Falls, the taller and more dramatic of the pair, where the river drops into a rocky amphitheater. The connector to Jones Run takes you through a quiet stretch of hemlock and oak before delivering the third waterfall, Jones Run Falls, a broad curtain of water sliding over mossy rock. Then comes the catch: a relentless climb back up to the AT and your car, gaining nearly 1,400 feet that your legs will remember. This is a hike for waterfall collectors who don't mind earning their views with a serious uphill finish.

Safety Advisory

Multiple stream crossings on this loop can become treacherous after heavy rain. Jones Run in particular can swell to knee-deep and fast-moving — check recent rainfall before heading out and be prepared to turn around.

The final climb back to the ridgeline is steep and sustained. In summer heat, this section can cause real trouble for hikers who underestimate the effort. Carry at least two liters of water per person and start early to avoid the afternoon furnace.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop clockwise — descend Doyles River first. The steeper, rockier Jones Run side is far more pleasant as a climb than a knee-punishing descent, and you'll hit the two biggest falls early when your legs are fresh.

Trail Tip

The rocks around all three falls get slick with spray and algae. Wear boots with real tread, not trail runners, especially in spring when flow is heavy and every surface near the falls is glazed with mist.

Trail Tip

The best light for photographing Lower Doyles River Falls hits the gorge in late morning when sun filters through the canopy above. Jones Run Falls faces north and stays in soft, even shade most of the day — perfect for long exposures without a filter.
