Browns Gap
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Multiple stream crossings on this loop can become treacherous after heavy rain. Jones Run in particular can swell to knee-deep and fast-moving — check recent rainfall before heading out and be prepared to turn around.
The final climb back to the ridgeline is steep and sustained. In summer heat, this section can cause real trouble for hikers who underestimate the effort. Carry at least two liters of water per person and start early to avoid the afternoon furnace.

Pro Tips
Hike the loop clockwise — descend Doyles River first. The steeper, rockier Jones Run side is far more pleasant as a climb than a knee-punishing descent, and you'll hit the two biggest falls early when your legs are fresh.
The rocks around all three falls get slick with spray and algae. Wear boots with real tread, not trail runners, especially in spring when flow is heavy and every surface near the falls is glazed with mist.
The best light for photographing Lower Doyles River Falls hits the gorge in late morning when sun filters through the canopy above. Jones Run Falls faces north and stays in soft, even shade most of the day — perfect for long exposures without a filter.
