Old Rag Summit via Berry Hollow
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The summit is fully exposed granite with steep drop-offs on multiple sides. Wind gusts can be surprisingly strong even on calm valley days — keep your footing secure and stay well back from edges, especially with kids.
Hypothermia is a real risk in winter and early spring. The summit sits above 3,200 feet and temperatures can drop twenty degrees below what you felt at the trailhead. Pack a wind layer even on mild days.

Pro Tips
Book your day-use ticket the moment they release — Old Rag permits sell out fast, especially on fall weekends. March through November requires advance tickets, and showing up without one means turning around at the trailhead.
Start by 7 AM to claim parking at Berry Hollow, which is a smaller lot than the main Old Rag lot. Arriving early also means you'll have the summit largely to yourself before the ridge-route crowds top out around midday.
The summit rocks face west-northwest, making late afternoon the money hour for photography — warm light raking across the valley with long shadows defining every ridge. But if you go for golden hour, bring a headlamp for the descent.
