What to Expect

Starting from the South River Picnic Grounds at Mile 62.7 on Skyline Drive, this circuit hike wastes no time dropping you into a lush hardwood forest that feels worlds away from the road above. The trail descends steadily through a canopy of oak and tulip poplar, with wildflowers carpeting the forest floor in spring — trillium, bloodroot, and Virginia bluebells show up in force. The path is well-maintained but rooty in places, and you will cross one stream that can run ankle-deep after rain. The payoff is an 83-foot waterfall cascading over a mossy rock face into a pool below, with an observation point that frames the whole drop. The return climb is the real workout — you gave back all that easy downhill elevation, and your legs will remind you. This one is perfect for waterfall chasers and birders who want a satisfying half-day hike without committing to an all-day suffer-fest.

Safety Advisory

The rocks near the base of the falls are perpetually wet and slick with algae — wear shoes with real tread and resist the urge to scramble closer to the cascade for a photo.

The stream crossing can go from a casual rock-hop to a shin-deep wade after heavy rain; check recent precipitation before heading out and bring trekking poles if storms passed through in the last 48 hours.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise to get the steeper descent out of the way while your legs are fresh and save the more gradual climb for the return — your knees will thank you.

Trail Tip

The observation point gives you the classic photo, but if you continue down the spur trail to the base of the falls, you get a completely different perspective and the sound alone is worth the extra effort.

Trail Tip

Arrive before 9 AM on weekends between May and October — the South River Picnic Grounds lot is small and fills fast, and unlike some Shenandoah trailheads there is no overflow parking nearby.
