Hike Boicourt Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The unpaved section beyond the accessible path can get slick after rain or snowmelt — packed clay in the badlands turns into something approximating an ice rink when wet. Check with a ranger if conditions look questionable.
There are no guardrails at the overlook edges. Keep a close grip on small kids, especially at the second viewpoint where the drop-off is more abrupt than it looks from a distance.

Pro Tips
Time your visit for the last hour before sunset — the second overlook past the pavement's end faces west, and the layered badlands formations turn copper and purple as the light drops. It's one of the best sunset spots you can reach in under ten minutes of walking.
This trail sits right off the scenic drive, so pair it with Ridgeline Nature Trail and Buck Hill for a trifecta of short stops that collectively give you the South Unit's greatest hits without committing to a full day hike.
Look for the dark bands ofite in the exposed rock faces near the overlook — these are remnants of underground coal seams that caught fire and baked the surrounding clay into a reddish rock called scoria. It's geology you can actually see happening in real time at Theodore Roosevelt.
