What to Expect

This paved loop along the Little Missouri River is a geological mood swing in under a mile. You start in the stark, eroded badlands that define the North Unit, all grey clay and exposed strata, then within minutes the landscape softens into a surprisingly lush riparian corridor where cottonwoods shade the riverbank. Interpretive stops along the way explain how water carved this improbable oasis out of otherwise punishing terrain — grab the free trail guide at the trailhead to follow along. The paved section is wheelchair-friendly and stroller-proof, but an unpaved spur adds another seven-tenths of a mile for anyone wanting to get a little dirt on their boots. This is the trail for visitors who want to understand the park, not just walk through it — part geology lesson, part nature walk, all accessible.

Safety Advisory

The Little Missouri can rise fast after rainstorms, and the trail runs right along the bank — check with rangers about recent conditions before heading out, especially in spring.

Bison roam freely through the North Unit and occasionally wander onto this trail. Give them at least 100 yards of space and never position yourself between a cow and calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Pick up the free interpretive guide at the trailhead before you start — the numbered stops along the trail correspond to the booklet and transform a casual stroll into a proper geology education.

Trail Tip

If you want the full experience, take the paved loop first, then double back for the unpaved extension — the dirt section follows the river more closely and feels like a different trail entirely.

Trail Tip

The North Unit gets a fraction of the visitors the South Unit does, so even in peak summer you may have this trail nearly to yourself. Morning light hits the badlands formations beautifully from the river corridor.
