What to Expect

Buck Hill is the kind of hike that rewards you way out of proportion to the effort. From the trailhead, you're looking at a steep but mercifully short push up an exposed hillside — think more stairmaster than marathon. The trail surface is packed dirt and loose gravel, and it climbs without much pretense of switchbacks. But within fifteen minutes, you're standing on one of the highest points in the South Unit, and the payoff is staggering: a full 360-degree panorama of badlands stretching to the horizon in every direction, striped buttes glowing in bands of red, gray, and ochre. On a clear day, the visibility feels almost unreasonable. There's no shade, no cover, and no reason to rush — just you and a landscape that looks like it belongs on another planet. This one is perfect for anyone who wants a big view without a big commitment.

Safety Advisory

The summit and upper trail have steep, unguarded drop-offs on several sides. Keep well back from edges, especially if it's windy — gusts in the badlands can be sudden and surprisingly strong.

There is zero shade on this entire hike. In summer, the exposed hillside bakes in direct sun and temperatures on the trail can run significantly hotter than what the forecast says. Carry water even for a thirty-minute outing.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for the first or last hour of daylight — the low-angle sun turns the badlands into a layered canvas of shadows and color that midday completely flattens.

Trail Tip

The trail is short enough that you don't need a full hiking kit, but wear shoes with actual tread. The loose gravel on the steeper sections will punish smooth soles, especially on the descent.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars. From the summit you can often spot bison herds grazing in the valleys below, and the distance makes them easy to miss with the naked eye.
