Lone Tree Loop
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The stream crossings are genuinely hazardous during spring snowmelt and after heavy rain — the Little Missouri can rise fast and the current is deceptively strong. Do not attempt crossings if water is above mid-thigh or visibly turbulent.
This loop has long exposed stretches with zero shade and no reliable water sources beyond the river. Carry all the water you need for the full circuit — at least three liters on warm days — and wear sun protection head to toe.
Bison frequent the river bottoms and grasslands along this route. Give them at least 100 yards of clearance. If one is blocking the trail near a crossing, wait it out — they move on their own schedule, not yours.

Pro Tips
Scout the Little Missouri River level before committing — if it's above knee height at the first crossing near Peaceful Valley, the deeper crossings further along the loop will be significantly worse. Rangers at the South Unit visitor center can tell you current conditions.
Bring trekking poles specifically for the stream crossings. The riverbed is slippery cobblestone, and a pole planted downstream gives you a third point of contact that makes all the difference between a safe crossing and an involuntary swim.
Hike the loop counterclockwise to tackle the Ekblom Trail connector and the trickiest crossings while your legs are fresh — the return leg along the river bottom is more forgiving and lets you cruise back to the ranch.
