What to Expect

This quick loop punches well above its weight. From the trailhead, you climb a series of built staircases and packed-dirt switchbacks through classic North Dakota badlands — banded clay hills striped in grays, rusts, and the occasional coal-black seam. The trail tops out on a narrow ridgeline where the views open up in every direction: eroded buttes, winding coulees, and grassland plateaus stretching to the horizon. At just over half a mile roundtrip, you could knock this out in twenty minutes, but the interpretive signs along the way reward a slower pace, breaking down how wind and water carved this alien landscape. The moderate grade comes from a few steep pitches and staircase sections that will get your heart rate up without wrecking your afternoon plans. Perfect for curious hikers who want a taste of badlands geology without committing to a full day on the trail.

Safety Advisory

Bentonite clay becomes extremely slippery when wet. If it has rained in the last few hours, the steep sections and stairs can be treacherous — postpone or move very carefully.

There is zero shade on the ridgeline. In summer, temperatures on exposed clay can feel fifteen degrees hotter than the forecast, so avoid the midday window from June through August.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit this trail early morning or late afternoon when the low-angle light turns the banded sediment layers into a painter's palette — midday sun washes everything out to a flat gray.

Trail Tip

Wear shoes with decent tread rather than sandals. The clay surface gets slick as ice after even light rain, and those staircase sections have no handrails in spots.

Trail Tip

Pair this with the nearby Coal Vein Trail for a solid hour of badlands exploration without any serious mileage — the two trails together give you the full geological story of the park.
