What to Expect

Starting from Oxbow Overlook in the park's less-trafficked North Unit, this out-and-back borrows the opening stretch of the Achenbach Trail before veering toward Sperati Point. The path rolls through mixed-grass prairie — big bluestem and western wheatgrass brushing your shins — with the landscape opening up in every direction. The terrain is gentle but uneven, with packed dirt giving way to patches of bentonite clay that can turn slick after rain. There's virtually no shade, so the sun and wind are your constant companions. The payoff at Sperati Point is a sweeping overlook where the Little Missouri River carves through badlands buttes far below, the kind of view that makes you understand why Roosevelt called this country 'perfect freedom.' Ideal for hikers who want a taste of the North Unit's solitude without committing to the full Achenbach loop.

Safety Advisory

Bentonite clay turns extraordinarily slick when wet. If it rained in the last 24 hours, the trail can be treacherous — clay accumulates on boot soles in heavy clumps that destroy traction.

Zero shade and full exposure for the entire route. In summer, temperatures on the open prairie can run fifteen to twenty degrees hotter than the forecast suggests. Carry more water than you think you need for a short hike.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start at Oxbow Overlook, not the Juniper Campground trailhead — it cuts the distance significantly and puts you on the scenic stretch immediately.

Trail Tip

Wear boots with decent tread rather than trail runners. The bentonite clay sections become greased-glass slippery with even light moisture, and ankle support helps on the uneven prairie terrain.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars — the overlook at Sperati Point sits high enough to spot bison herds moving through the river bottom, and longhorn feral cattle sometimes graze the slopes below.
