What to Expect

This is less a hike and more a walk through a Caribbean ghost story — one with a stunning backdrop. The loop winds through the stone ruins of an 18th-century Danish sugar plantation perched on a hillside above Leinster Bay, where crumbling walls, old factory equipment, and a partially intact windmill tower tell a brutal history of enslaved labor. The trail is well-maintained but uneven in spots, with stone steps and packed dirt that can get slick after rain. The elevation gain is barely noticeable — think a few flights of stairs spread over the whole route. Interpretive signs do the heavy lifting on history, so you can move at your own pace. The real payoff is the overlook where plantation ruins frame turquoise water and the British Virgin Islands beyond. History buffs and families with curious kids will get the most out of this one.

Safety Advisory

There is almost no shade on the upper portions of the trail, and Caribbean sun is no joke — sunscreen, a hat, and water are non-negotiable even for a short walk.

Watch your footing on the stone steps and ruins, especially after rain. Algae builds up on the old stonework and it gets genuinely slippery.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for the ranger-led cultural demonstrations, typically offered during peak season (December through April) — they bring the ruins to life with storytelling about plantation-era sugar production and the lives of enslaved people.

Trail Tip

Park early at the Annaberg lot, which fills up by mid-morning in high season. If it's full, there's overflow along North Shore Road, but you'll add a short roadside walk.

Trail Tip

After finishing the plantation loop, walk down to the shoreline at Leinster Bay — the snorkeling along the rocks is quietly excellent, and almost nobody bothers to check it out.
