What to Expect

This short coastal ramble delivers a Caribbean postcard without breaking a sweat. The trail hugs the northeastern shore of St. John, winding past sea grape trees and salt-kissed brush before opening up to rocky shoreline where the water shifts from turquoise to deep cobalt in the span of a few feet. The path is mostly flat and sandy with occasional coral rock underfoot, so forget the hiking boots — sport sandals with grip are the move here. The real draw is the reef access: wade in from the beach sections and you're snorkeling over brain coral and parrotfish territory within minutes. This is less a hike and more a slow-motion coastal exploration, perfect for families with kids who need to touch everything and snorkelers who want to skip the boat trip.

Safety Advisory

Coral rock along the shoreline is razor-sharp and slippery when wet — a stumble here means cuts that take forever to heal in tropical humidity. Wear water shoes, not flip-flops.

No shade for long stretches of this trail. Heat and sun exposure are real concerns, especially midday. Bring more water than you think you need for a flat mile and a half.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Bring reef-safe sunscreen — it's required by USVI law, and rangers do check. Pick up a zinc-based brand before you fly in, since island prices are brutal.

Trail Tip

Time your visit for mid-morning when the sun is high enough to light up the reef but before the afternoon trade winds chop up the surface and kill snorkel visibility.

Trail Tip

Pack a dry bag with your snorkel gear and wear it on the walk out — there's no gear rental at the trailhead, and the best entry points are partway along the route, not at the start.
