What to Expect

This is the Caribbean equivalent of a victory lap — minimal effort, maximum reward. From the parking area, a gentle downhill path drops you onto Salt Pond Bay's crescent beach in about ten minutes flat. The trail is wide, mostly smooth with some loose gravel, and shaded enough that you won't feel like you're melting before you even reach the sand. Once at the beach, the water is calm and shallow with a gradual slope, making it one of the most forgiving snorkel entries on St. John. If you're feeling ambitious, the spur trail out to Ram Head adds a rocky, sun-exposed scramble along coastal cliffs to a dramatic headland with views that stretch to the British Virgin Islands. That extension turns a casual beach walk into something with a bit of edge. Families with small kids, snorkelers hauling gear, and anyone who believes the best hikes end at a beach will love this one.

Safety Advisory

The Ram Head extension is fully exposed with zero shade and no water sources. On a typical 85-degree day it feels considerably hotter on that rocky headland — carry more water than you think you need and cover your head.

Strong currents can develop in the channel beyond Salt Pond Bay's protected cove. Stay inside the bay for snorkeling unless you're an experienced open-water swimmer.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hit Salt Pond early — by mid-morning the parking lot fills up and you'll be circling like a shark. Arriving before 9 AM also means calmer water and better snorkel visibility.

Trail Tip

Bring reef-safe sunscreen and water shoes with grip if you plan to continue to Ram Head. The trail beyond the beach is rocky, exposed coral and volcanic rock that will punish bare feet or flimsy flip-flops.

Trail Tip

The best snorkeling is along the rocks on the east side of Salt Pond Bay, not the center of the beach. Hug the shoreline and you'll find parrotfish, sea turtles, and healthy coral without fighting the crowd.
