Hike Black Bay Beaver Pond Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
The boat access requirement adds real risk — check weather and wind conditions on Rainy Lake before heading out, and make sure someone knows your float plan. Afternoon thunderstorms can roll in fast and turn a calm lake crossing into a serious situation.
The rock ridges along the trail can be slick when wet, and footing gets tricky in early spring or after rain. Wear boots with solid traction rather than trail runners.

Pro Tips
You'll need to arrange your own boat or rent one near the Rainy Lake Visitor Center — there's no shuttle service. If you don't own a watercraft, check with local outfitters in Rainy Lake or International Falls for pontoon or motorboat rentals, and get directions to the exact landing point before you shove off.
Bring bug spray that means business. Voyageurs in summer is mosquito and black fly headquarters, and this trail through damp pine forest near a beaver pond is essentially their office. A head net isn't overkill from late May through July.
Visit the beaver pond during the golden hour before sunset — beavers are crepuscular, so late afternoon gives you the best shot at catching them hauling branches and slapping tails. Stay quiet at the pond's edge for ten minutes and you'll likely see activity.
