What to Expect

This is the kind of trail that rewards curiosity more than cardio. You'll follow an old forest road — wide, flat, and forgiving underfoot — through a mix of birch, aspen, and spruce that feels distinctly northern Minnesota. The real draw here is the geology: slabs of exposed greenstone and basalt line the path, remnants of volcanic activity that predates complex life on Earth by a comfortable billion years. It's like walking through an open-air museum where nobody charges admission. The trail dead-ends at Sullivan Bay on Kabetogama Lake, where a picnic table and fire ring sit at a viewpoint overlooking the water. The payoff is quiet and understated — no dramatic cliff edge, just a north-woods panorama that makes you want to sit a while. Perfect for families with young kids, geology nerds, and anyone who'd rather stroll than scramble.

Safety Advisory

Voyageurs is serious tick country from spring through fall. Wear treated clothing and do a thorough check after your hike — deer ticks here carry Lyme disease and are aggressive in the tall grass along the trail margins.

Leave your dog at home or with a sitter. Pets are banned on all Voyageurs trails to protect the park's wolf population from disease transmission, and rangers enforce it.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your visit for late afternoon in summer — the western-facing viewpoint at Sullivan Bay catches gorgeous light across the water, and the bugs tend to calm down as the air cools.

Trail Tip

Bring a hand lens or magnifying glass if you're into geology. The exposed Precambrian rock along the trail shows pillow basalt structures and greenstone textures that are easy to miss at a glance but fascinating up close.

Trail Tip

Pack a picnic for the fire ring at the end — it's one of the few land-accessible lakeside spots in a park that's otherwise dominated by boat access. Claim the table and make an afternoon of it.
