Kabetogama Lake Shore Trail
What to Expect
Safety Advisory
Black bears are active in the Kabetogama area, especially in berry season from late July through September. Make noise on the trail and keep food sealed — this isn't grizzly country, but a surprised black bear is still a bad day.
Exposed tree roots can be slippery when wet. After rain, the otherwise easy trail surface gets deceptively slick in shaded sections.

Pro Tips
Time your hike for early morning or the last two hours before sunset — Kabetogama Lake turns glassy calm, loon calls carry for miles, and you'll have the best chance of spotting moose browsing near the water's edge.
Bring bug spray with serious DEET content from late May through August. The boreal forest mosquitoes here are legendary, and this lakeside trail sits right in their sweet spot of shade and standing water.
Pack binoculars — the open lake views make this one of the best casual birding walks in the park. Bald eagles nest along this shoreline, and great blue herons work the shallows near the midpoint of the trail.
