What to Expect

This is Voyageurs at its most accessible — a flat, forested path that hugs the southern shore of Kabetogama Lake, threading between boreal forest and open water. The trail rolls over gentle terrain with barely enough elevation change to notice, winding through stands of birch, aspen, and spruce with periodic clearings that open up wide views across the lake. You'll hear loons before you see them, and bald eagles patrol the shoreline like they own the place (they do). The path surface is a mix of packed dirt and exposed root, soft underfoot but occasionally uneven enough to demand attention. The turnaround rewards you with a quiet stretch of rocky shoreline perfect for sitting and watching the water. This is a trail for people who hike to decompress, not to conquer — families, birders, and anyone who thinks the best part of a national park is the sound of absolutely nothing.

Safety Advisory

Black bears are active in the Kabetogama area, especially in berry season from late July through September. Make noise on the trail and keep food sealed — this isn't grizzly country, but a surprised black bear is still a bad day.

Exposed tree roots can be slippery when wet. After rain, the otherwise easy trail surface gets deceptively slick in shaded sections.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Time your hike for early morning or the last two hours before sunset — Kabetogama Lake turns glassy calm, loon calls carry for miles, and you'll have the best chance of spotting moose browsing near the water's edge.

Trail Tip

Bring bug spray with serious DEET content from late May through August. The boreal forest mosquitoes here are legendary, and this lakeside trail sits right in their sweet spot of shade and standing water.

Trail Tip

Pack binoculars — the open lake views make this one of the best casual birding walks in the park. Bald eagles nest along this shoreline, and great blue herons work the shallows near the midpoint of the trail.
