What to Expect

This is not your typical trailhead-starts-at-the-parking-lot hike — reaching Kettle Falls Trail requires a boat, which immediately filters out the crowds and adds a layer of adventure before you even lace up. The trail follows an old portage route used by fur traders and Ojibwe long before the park existed, winding through dense boreal forest of spruce, birch, and fir. The path is mostly flat with only gentle undulations (think a few flights of stairs spread across the whole route), so the work here is mental, not physical. You'll cross boardwalks over marshy stretches before arriving at the historic Kettle Falls Hotel and the dam where Namakan Lake spills into Rainy Lake. The real payoff is standing where the border between the U.S. and Canada literally flows beneath your feet. Perfect for history buffs and anyone who likes earning their scenery by water rather than by switchback.

Safety Advisory

Boardwalk sections can be slippery when wet — the combination of wood and lake-country humidity creates a surface that behaves like ice under damp conditions. Tread carefully after rain.

This is black bear country. Make noise on the trail, store food properly, and be aware of your surroundings, especially near berry patches in late summer.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

You need a boat to reach the trailhead — the Kettle Falls cruise operated by the park is the easiest option if you don't have your own. Book early in summer because it fills up fast, and check the current schedule since it only runs seasonally.

Trail Tip

The Kettle Falls Hotel at trail's end serves food and drinks, making this one of the rare hikes where a cold beer is waiting at the turnaround point. Time your hike so you arrive during their serving hours — they keep limited schedules.

Trail Tip

Bring bug spray with serious DEET concentration, not the gentle stuff. The boreal forest and marshy boardwalk sections are prime mosquito and black fly territory from June through August, and they are relentless.
