What to Expect
This is one of the rare trails in Voyageurs where you don't need a boat to enjoy the park — and that alone makes it worth your time. The paved path winds through boreal forest, skirting exposed rock outcrops that are billions of years old (some of the oldest exposed rock on the continent, if that sort of thing gives you chills). You'll weave between stands of birch and spruce, catch glimpses of Rainy Lake through the trees, and pass marshy stretches where great blue herons hunt in the shallows. The terrain is dead flat and fully paved, making it one of the most accessible trails in the entire national park system. Don't let the 'strenuous' rating fool you — this is a gentle meander, not a sufferfest. Perfect for families with strollers, wheelchair users, dog walkers, or anyone who just wants to breathe in the north woods without breaking a sweat.
Safety Advisory
Mosquitoes and black flies are legendary here from late May through July — head nets and DEET are not optional, they're survival gear.
In winter, ice can form on the paved surface making sections slick. Traction devices or snowshoes are a smart call from November through March.

Pro Tips
Trail Tip
Bring binoculars — the marsh sections are prime moose and heron habitat, especially in early morning when the water is still and glassy.
Trail Tip
In winter, this trail doubles as a fantastic snowshoe route with far fewer people than summer. The snow-covered boreal forest feels like a different planet.
Trail Tip
Cycle it first to scout, then walk it back slowly — on a bike you'll cover it fast enough to identify the rock outcrops and lake viewpoints worth lingering at on foot.
