What to Expect

Cold Brook Canyon eases you from the shade of tall ponderosa pines into wide-open mixed-grass prairie over a leisurely 1.4-mile one-way ramble. The trail drops into the canyon along a seasonal creek bed, where the forest canopy thins and the air opens up. You'll cross through a lively prairie dog town — expect sentinel barks announcing your arrival and dozens of furry heads popping up like a game of whack-a-mole. The transition from forest to grassland happens gradually enough that you almost don't notice until you're standing in full sun with bison-grazed hills rolling in every direction. This is a moderate hike thanks to some uneven footing on the canyon descent, but nothing that'll have you questioning your life choices. Perfect for hikers who want a taste of the Black Hills' ecological diversity without committing to a full-day death march.

Safety Advisory

Bison frequently graze the prairie sections near the canyon mouth. Maintain at least 100 yards of distance — they look docile until they don't, and they can sprint three times faster than you can run.

Rattlesnakes are present in the canyon from late spring through early fall. Watch your step on rocky sections and never reach where you can't see.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Start from the Elk Mountain Campground trailhead in the early morning — the prairie dog town is most active in the first two hours after sunrise, and you'll beat the midday heat on the exposed prairie sections.

Trail Tip

Bring binoculars rather than trying to approach the prairie dogs. They'll let you get surprisingly close, but a good pair of optics lets you watch their social behavior without disrupting the colony.

Trail Tip

Connect this with the Highland Creek Trail for a longer loop if you're feeling ambitious — the junction is well-marked and the combination gives you canyon, forest, and prairie in a single outing.
