What to Expect

Rankin Ridge is Wind Cave's quiet overachiever — a short loop that delivers views wildly disproportionate to the effort required. The trail climbs gradually through ponderosa pine forest, the ground carpeted with needles and the air smelling like butterscotch bark on warm days. The elevation gain is gentle enough that you'll barely notice it until you pop out onto the exposed ridge and realize you're staring at a 360-degree panorama of the Black Hills, with the prairie stretching east into forever. The old fire lookout tower at the summit anchors the experience — it's one of the few places where you can see both the forested hills and the grasslands colliding in real time. This is a perfect trail for hikers who want a legitimate payoff without committing to an all-day death march.

Safety Advisory

The ridge top is fully exposed with zero shade — on summer afternoons the sun is relentless, and afternoon thunderstorms can roll in fast with lightning that has nowhere to go but into you and that fire tower.

Bison occasionally graze in the meadows near the trailhead and along the lower sections — give them at least 100 yards and never position yourself between a cow and her calf.

Pro Tips

Trail Tip

Hike the loop counterclockwise to get the steeper section out of the way first and finish with a gentle downhill through the pines — most people go clockwise and miss this trick.

Trail Tip

The fire lookout tower at the top has interpretive panels that help you identify distant landmarks including Harney Peak and the Cathedral Spires — spend ten minutes up there instead of just snapping a photo and leaving.

Trail Tip

Combine this with a cave tour in the morning when cave temperatures feel refreshing, then hit Rankin Ridge in the late afternoon when the golden light on the grasslands is at its best and the crowds from the cave parking lot have cleared out.
